ALLENTOWN, Pa. — Families of Allentown children who will be 4 years old by Sept. 1 are invited to register those tots for pre-kindergarten for the 2023-24 school year.

Allentown School District opened the process in a written announcement Thursday with the only other requirement being that the child must live within the school district's boundaries.

  • Allentown School District is accepting pre-kindergarten registration applications
  • A maximum of 160 children will be accepted for the 2023-24 school year
  • Orientation begins the week of Aug. 21

Instructions for parents to register begin with visiting the enrollment and registration page on its website.

After the application is reviewed, the district will contact applicants regarding their status.

"These early learning experiences will provide our students with a strong foundation for learning, build their social skills, and foster their emotional well-being."

Applications will be weighed with some combination of family size and income but exact ratios are not available, Allentown School District Communications Manager Melissa Reese said.

Eight classes, each with a maximum of 20 students, will be filled, for a maximum of 160 students in the program, Reese said.

Two classrooms will be in Jackson Early Childhood Center and Roosevelt Elementary School, and one classroom each in Muhlenberg, Mosser, Central and Union Terrace elementary schools.

“These early learning experiences will provide our students with a strong foundation for learning, build their social skills, and foster their emotional well-being," Allentown Schools Superintendent Carol D. Birks said in a statement.

"Children who participate in high quality early learning opportunities tend to have better academic performance, higher graduation rates and increased likelihood of pursuing higher education.”
