Bethlehem Area School District opts for mix of in-person and virtual instruction for fall

Dr.-Joseph-Roy
Bethlehem Area School District Superintendent, Dr. Joseph J. Roy announcing details of the school district's plan for Fall 2020 via Facebook live.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Joseph Roy announced Friday he’sproposing a hybrid model.

"A hybrid model is simply 50 percent of the students come to school on any given day," said Roy.

Roy says this will limit the amount of time students have to wear masks at schools and allow for better social distancing. On the days students are not at schools they will participate in online learning. The plan also includes some limited childcare options.

"The recommendations of our health professionals is that it’s safe to open schools under the plans that we have. Closing schools in my mind would be too far and be an overreach that’s not necessary," said Roy.

The school board will take up the plan on August 10th. Roy says it might change. Schools may have to close and parents should be prepared for the possibility.

The Allentown School Districtopted last week to go completely virtual until 2021.
