NORTH WHITEHALL TWP., Pa. — This spring will have many new and returning recreation opportunities for North Whitehall residents.

Township Manager Randy Cope outlined upcoming programs and events at the township Board of Supervisors meeting Monday.

They include an Intro to Fly Fishing class, a Birding Adventure at Trexler Nature Preserve and a second session of the township’s Summer Recreation program.

Cope said the township will also hold more pickleball lessons, put on a Movies in the Park series for its second year, hold another Junior First Responders camp and bring back the Mighty Kicks soccer program for kids.

“It’s great to see that community support, and we’re excited to start these new programs for the residents."

Cope said the township is able to put on new events and programs because it has ramped up its sponsorship outreach.

“It’s great to see that community support, and we’re excited to start these new programs for the residents,” Cope said.

Supervisors decided to put the Strawberry Acres housing development on its April agenda after residents requested they do so. The board could deny the plan at that meeting or decide not to take action.

The deadline for action had been delayed until June.

The board voted unanimously to adopt a new law that would let township staff address nuisances such as tall weeds and junk vehicles faster than they currently can.

The township will issue a violation notice to anyone with a nuisance on their property. If it is not resolved, the property owner would face a $1,000 fine and could face a continued fine for every day the nuisance is not addressed.

Supervisors approved the hiring of Mike Kukitz as the township’s new director of grants, preservation and trails.

In the new position, Kukitz will run the preservation program for farmland and open space and write grants related to emergency services and building up the Jordan Creek Greenway.

Kukitz previously was the Upper Macungie Township Recreation Manager. He will start on March 11.

Supervisors also approved hiring a new Public Works laborer, Tyler Fatzinger.

The board appointed Sean Ziller to the Planning Commission and Dan Fracas to the Zoning Hearing Board.
