SOUTH WHITEHALL TWP., Pa. — South Whitehall residents soon will have a chance to learn about how their local government operates and how to get involved.

South Whitehall Township will hold its first Municipal Open House on Wednesday, Dec. 13 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The event will have light refreshments, including coffee, hot chocolate and cookies. There also will be giveaways — informational packets and flyers, Township Manager Tom Petrucci said.

“Bring the family for some hot chocolate and cookies then learn about how staff can help residents and businesses AND how easy it is to make a difference in your community by joining one of our Board or Commissions!” the Facebook post about the event read.

Petrucci said in an email that he decided to hold the open house as a way to help residents understand township operations and encourage people to get involved.

At the event, township employees will present information about their departments and the township’s 12 different volunteer boards and commissions at booths.

They include the Planning Commission, Parks and Recreation Board, the Environmental Advisory Council and the Public Safety Commission.

Petrucci said previously that there are a number of vacancies on several township boards and commissions, and he has not received new applications since advertising the positions.

Residents can apply to any of the boards that have vacancies. The South Whitehall Board of Commissioners, the elected board of the township, votes on whether to appoint applicants.
