Heads up! Here are 5 things you don't want to miss today

Happy Wednesday, readers. We're halfway through the week (and just a few days away from the start of the World Series. Go Phillies!)

If you're like us and enjoy browsing the National Day Calendar, you'll see that today marks a seasonably appropriate celebration.

1. It's National Pumpkin Day! (Did you know the word pumpkin originates from the word pepon, which means “large melon” in Greek? You learn something new every day!) Our reporter Olivia Richardson has more to say about this pumpkin season. Check out her story!

2. Speaking of things related to fall, our beautiful fall foliage is hitting its peak color this week, according to the PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR). Get out and enjoy it while you can.

3. The weather today isn't all that different from yesterday's; it's still cloudy and foggy with a chance of drizzle or light showers. The good news is it's going to gradually become clear after 2 a.m. on Thursday. The sun should return soon!

4. As winter is approaching and heating oil prices reach record highs, Northampton County is covering some energy costs for citizens over 60 who are at risk of losing their heating. For more details, head to the story by Ryan Gaylor.

5. Election day is less than two weeks away! Last November, hundreds of ballots were disqualified in the Lehigh Valley, and this could have affected the outcome in some tight races. Here's what you can do to avoid that.

The normal author of 5 Things is still at the beach, but she doesn't want you to forget about her, so we'll leave you with this thought:

“As long as autumn lasts, I shall not have hands, canvas and colors enough to paint the beautiful things I see.”
