BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Brad Klein reviews the week’s astronomical highlights with Bethlehem’s ‘Backyard Astronomy Guy,’ Marty McGuire.
This week, they look forward to Lehigh Valley Space Fest, which takes place Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 12-13, at Lafayette College in Easton.
McGuire is a co-founder of the event with NASA Solar System Ambassador Todd Sullivan. Their mission: “To bring space down to Earth,” according to the event’s website.
A wide range of programs and speakers are on the schedule, running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.
Speakers include space industry experts, professors and NASA scientists.
There will also be special telescopes manned by volunteers, allowing the public a safe view of the sun, weather permitting.
We are in a period of increased solar activity so, according to McGuire, “hopefully there will be some sun spots and things to see with those solar telescopes. And the amateur astronomers will be able to help explain what you're looking at.”
Among the speakers is Kim P. Gostelow, a former NASA/JPL software engineer who has worked on a number of the space agency's Mars rovers. He’s now retired and makes his home in Upper Black Eddy, Bucks County.
