WASHINGTON - The U.S. House of Representatives passed a massive infrastructure bill last week, supported by Democrats. Now paving its way to the Senate, a Republican speaks out about the legislation.

The bill would not only modernize water and sewer, but also roads, bridges, and rail systems across the country at a cost of $715 billion.

Steve Kelly is a spokesperson for Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA).

Kelly says the senator would not support tax increases or adding to the national deficit as ways to fund the legislation.

“What he would like to see happen is that most of this bill be paid for through reprogramming of the over $1 trillion in stimulus and COVID-19 relief bill revenue that doesn't go out the door until next year,” Kelly says.

Toomey has several criteria he wants met regarding the bill, Kelly says.

“The first is that it would concentrate on actual infrastructure: bridges, roads, highways, tunnels, airports, things of that nature,” he says, “Anything relating to social welfare he would like to see that kept out of this bill.”
