Easton Farmers' Market celebrates 273rd season with spring opening

Locally grown produce was on display at the West Ward Farmers Market in Easton on Wednesday.

EASTON, Pa. — Easton Farmers’ Market will add another notch to its belt as the nation’s longest continuously operating open air market when it opens for its 273rd season Saturday.

The celebrated market alongside the waterfront at Scott Park will open its spring season from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Opening Day festivities will include live music, family activities and a ceremonial conch-shell blowing to launch the new season.

Shoppers can explore more than 50 vendors, including longtime favorites and new stands, bringing exciting local flavors to the table.

The big day comes just shortly after the market's sister operation, Easton Public Market, again placed in USA Today newspaper's 10BEST Awards for Best Public Market.

Looking for good veggies? Salvaterra’s Gardens of Allentown uses 19th Century Parisian gardening techniques with 21st Century farming practices to practice conservation while generating a high yield of organic, quality produce.

How about some gourmet cheese? Raspberry Ridge Sheep Farm will be there, offering a wealth of cheese and yogurt made with milk from its own grass-fed sheep.

If you’re in need of a piece of meat to take center stage on the dinner plate, Breakaway Farms has all you could want, including beef, poultry, pork, lamb, bacon, smoked meats and more.

'More than a place to buy food'

Over at Stone Oven at Apple Ridge Farm, you can pick up some wood-fire brick oven baked sourdough bread and perhaps some cookies, croissants and pastries for dessert.

As for the rest, there are plenty of options, whether you’re shopping for specialty foods, flowers and other plants, local libations, works of art, and, of course, ready-to-eat offerings from local restaurants and cafes.

Roland and the Greater Easton Development Partnership, which runs the market, said they are committed to supporting regional agriculture, reducing food miles and providing access to nutritious, locally grown food.

SNAP and EBT benefits are accepted and doubled through the Easton Market District’s Food Access program.

Visitors to the market are encouraged to bring reusable bags for their trip, and to take a stroll along the nearby Delaware and Lehigh River trails before or after shopping to enjoy the beauty of nature in the spring.

Free parking is available nearby, and volunteers are welcomed to help support the market’s operations and mission.
