Plans for a new Taco Bell with dual drive-thru at MacArthur Road and Mickley Road were approved by the Whitehall Township Planning Commission on Wednesday night.

WHITEHALL TWP., Pa. — Driving along MacArthur Road after a long day at work? Not in the mood to cook? Got a hankerin' for Locos Tacos or a Grande Burrito?

A new faster Taco Bell is on the way for MacArthur Road.

Whitehall Township Planning Commission gave the project final unanimous approval Wednesday. On Tuesday, the project got approval for zoning variance requests.

Having been given the green light, developer Whitehall Commerce LLC of Conshohocken, Montgomery County, will proceed with plans to demolish the existing Taco Bell at 2113 MacArthur Road and construct a new one on the site.

The new Taco Bell will have two drive-thru lanes to address one's hunger in half the time.

The new Taco Bell will measure 2,690 square feet. It would be different from the existing one in that it will have two drive-thru lanes to address one's hunger in half the time.

The new Taco Bell should be ready for business in roughly four months, according to Joe DePascale, development manager for Summerwood Corp., the operating company of Whitehall Commerce.

The planning commission approval was contingent on the developer making arrangements to have a fire hydrant installed near the site, to which it has agreed.

Brian Cleary, project manager of The Pettit Group, made the final presentation to the commission on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the project moved closer to approval after several zoning variances sought by the developer were approved.

The plan for the proposed 16 parking spaces is compliant with current zoning, Cleary said.

Other items on the agenda

In other business, the planning commission approved a special exemption for Clean House Recycling to place three donation bins in the parking lot at Whitehall Square at 2160 MacArthur Road.

The bins would collect donations such as clothing and toys for underprivileged families.

Jenna Castman, representing the applicant, assured the commission there would be no issue with donations being left outside the bins after they were full.

She said the bins are quite large and donations will be picked up two or three times a week.

Approval was given to TNT Fireworks to erect a large tent at Whitehall Square at 2180 MacArthur Road.

The approval was made provided no parking spaces were taken up by the tent. Debbie Ivins of TNT Fireworks said none would be.

TNT Fireworks has run its business there for a number of years, Ivins said.

Preliminary approval was given for a proposed addition to the Mister Car Wash at 2160 MacArthur Road.

The addition is an 8-by-12-foot pet spa that would be attached to the car wash structure, property owner Jonathan Amory told the board.

Discussion on a Wawa subdivision land redevelopment proposal for MacArthur Road and Mickley Road was on the agenda but tabled for discussion at a later date.

The Wawa will replace the former Sears Auto Center at the Whitehall Mall.
