BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The Pennsylvania Turnpike is advising E-ZPass users to be weary of a new phishing text going around.
On Sunday afternoon, the turnpike was notified of the scam, which targets account holders, the agency said in a release.
The texts claim to come from "PA Turnpike toll services" and warn users of an outstanding toll amount, which can be paid by visiting the provided link to avoid a late fee.
Similar phishing scams have been reported to toll agencies throughout the country over the past several days, the release said.
Anyone who gets an unsolicited text, email or similar message suggesting it is from a toll agency should not click the link, the release said.
They can also file a complaint with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.ic3.gov.
E-ZPass accountholders can check their accounts through approved safe methods such as the PA Turnpike E-ZPass website or the PA Toll Pay app on the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
