BETHLEHEM, Pa. - One year ago, after pro-Trump rioters broke into the U.S. Capitol, WLVR News Director Jen Rehill spoke by phone with U.S. Congresswoman Susan Wild (D-Lehigh Valley).
The conversation started with Rehill asking Wild where she was and if she was safe.
“I am safe,” Wild said at the time, “I can’t disclose where I am now. I am with about 300-400 members of Congress being held at an undisclosed location.”
She went on to describe, that night and what it was like fleeing the House chambers.
“It was scary. I lost a shoe in the process which just made me more anxious because I was afraid I would have trouble running if I needed to, minus a shoe,” Wild said a year ago, “It was an extremely stressful situation, and at the same time, not sure whether we were about to get shot or not.”
Wednesday, one year later, Rehill sat down with Wild to reflect on her experience during the insurrection.
And their phone call on that memorable night.
Rehill reminded Wild of her stunning account: hearing the crowds outside the doors of the chambers, sheltering on the floor between seats, talking about calling her children, hearing gunshots and losing her shoe.
And she asked the congresswoman looking back a year later, what stands out to her now, and what’s it been like processing that experience and the aftermath of that day.
