COVID has changed the way people work out to stay physically and mentally healthy

BETHLEHEM TWP, Pa. - The past year and a half has changed the way many people work out. Gyms are now offering more virtual classes and some fitness enthusiasts say they may never fully go back to in-person workouts.

Early on in the pandemic, Inner Strength Fitness Studio in Bethlehem Township found a way to keep clients safe and still in shape.

It hosted workouts online as part of the gym membership.

Owner Shanen Hoke said now it offers live-streamed and taped classes.

“We kind of had to quickly move to how we were going to still keep our community together and get everybody's, still get their workout in,” she said.

Fitness is important during the pandemic, she said, not just to help people stay in shape, but also for their mental health.

The live stream classes are how Mallory Henry of Allentown, fits in her exercise now.

“I can sign up for classes, the accountability is there because I already signed up for it. So it's like, OK, I have to attend, they think I'm coming, but also just the convenience for me has just outweighed everything else,” Henry said.

Henry loves the flexibility and schedule of virtual gym classes and she has  even been able to use them to work out on vacation, she said.
