BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The region’s largest one-day food drive is happening Saturday.
Scouting for Food, organized by the Boy Scouts of America Minsi Trail Council, will start at 8 a.m. Saturday in the Lehigh Valley.
Folks are asked to place food in a bag where it can be seen from the street by 8 a.m. Organizers say they will take non-perishable foods only, and no glass jars or expired foods.
The drive covers Lehigh, Northampton, Carbon, Monroe and Luzerne counties. More than 6,000 Scouts are involved in the efforts, with food going directly to pantries and soup kitchens in the Lehigh Valley and beyond.
Scouts canvassed the area last week and left tags and door hangers that can be attached to bags left out for pickup. Besides canned foods and dry goods, baby formula and paper products also are in demand.
Organizers say more than 40 percent of the collection goes to kids under age 10.
Those who choose to bring food to dropoff locations can find a list of location, as well as area food banks that benefit, at scouting4food.com.
